KAREN POYNOR

Karen Poynor is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), a National Certified Counselor (NCC) and Registered Play Therapist (RPT). Karen earned her undergraduate degree, Bachelors in Psychology, graduating Summa Cum Laude, at Nyack College in Nyack, New York. She went on to earn her Masters in Professional Counseling at Georgia State University in 2001. She has worked with families in crisis and completed intensive clinical reports, helping the Department of Family and Children Services with high-risk children that have been placed in foster care. In 2004, Karen began doing play therapy with young children under the supervision of a renowned Registered Play Therapy Supervisor and has now earned her own title as Registered Play Therapist (RPT).
Karen is skilled with the ability to help the most challenging of children with the research-supported non-directive Play Therapy, in which the child takes the lead in the session healing at their needed pace, while the therapist closely follows and examines his or her play. Karen believes that children know what they need to work on and that their play will take them to where they need to go for healing. Karen has successfully worked with children with a wide variety of diagnoses that includes Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Anxiety Disorders, Adjustment Disorders, and Grief and Loss.
